Why the incarnation?

“Emmanuel,” one of the names given to Jesus, means “God with us.” But what does it mean for God to be with us, and for him to be with us in the person of Jesus? That’s the teaching called the “Incarnation,” and it is foundational to everything we believe about Christmas. But did Christmas have to happen this way?
